About Us

The word “neta” comes from a quiet inversion of the word “tane 種” – meaning ingredient. In sushi, it refers to the ingredient placed atop the shari (better known locally as sushi or vinegared rice). This reversal is rooted in “tōgo 倒語”, a form of coded language traditionally used by craftsman and merchants in the Edo period.

Words were intentionally restructured as a way of speaking within the trade — an insider language, passed between hands. Neta is one of the few words of the period that have endured, evolving from colloquial shorthand to the language of the craft.

At Neta, we keep our focus on ingredients — their origins, and the craftsmen and labourers involved in bringing food to the table.

Rooted in the Japanese principles of mottainai (勿体無い) and continuous self-improvement through kaizen (改善), Neta is a fish-forward grocer guided by seasonality, restraint, and care. We source thoughtfully, selecting produce and provisions for their quality, character, and provenance rather than excess.

By day, we are a seafood-forward grocer and takeaway shop located in Telok Kurau. By night, a small bites bar – unhurried and without pretense. Through it all, we maintain the philosophies of ingredients chosen carefully, and handled with respect.
